ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the impact of chronic health issues and disability on queer people and how it differs from the heterosexual population in terms of safe (non-homophobic) access to health services and carers. It will offer a guide for therapists to best support the queer population when faced with these issues, as they are generally unspoken about, rendering the queer people with chronic health issues invisible. Iantaffi covers how we define chronic health and disability, the models of disability, with critical thinking on the medical model. The chapter explains the ten principles of disability justice and how it is particularly relevant to Queer people. Iantaffi offers insights on how to work therapeutically with trans and queer disabled people, as well as some excellent reflective questions for practitioners.
