ABSTRACT

This research focuses on the study of the publication of news about the femicide of Ciudad Juarez by a Mexican digital news agency, CIMAC. The main objective is to understand the mechanisms by which the publication of femicide news is carried out in a context where most media either silence that type of news or relate it without a gender perspective. Analysis content methodology was used to study 1,284 news articles produced by CIMAC on the femicide of Ciudad Juarez between 1999 and 2015 and published on its website. All of these news ended up being divided into a number of thematic categories. An analysis of news-values was carried out in each of the proposed thematic classes. Although different results were presented in each of them, they all have in common that the only two in which there is no inversion of news-values are, within the interests of the audience, those of thematic preference and human interest. It can be noted as the main conclusion that CIMAC has used a number of complementary newsworthiness factors to publish news about femicide in Mexico, as these elements have served as a guide to breaking traditional news selection criteria.
