ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how the news media landscape has changed since the appearance of the Internet and the emergence of what is known as digital journalism. The online scenario has given rise to disparate challenges, changes, but also business and audience-related opportunities to which both legacy media and digital-only news outlets have tried to answer and to adapt to their particular circumstances. The model business crisis led to innovative attempts to engage with the audience and survive in a mass of media. Now, old media compete with digital native media, some based on successful online business models. However, the rapid pace of transformation in the digital landscape pushes media to adopt a strategy of constant innovation to react to each new need, request, and change.
