ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Linus Gustafsson provides an overview of the online activities of the Swedish violence-promoting Islamist extremist milieu on the social media platform Facebook. Accordingly, the chapter accounts for select parts of the social media use among Swedish-speaking jihadists. Apart from functioning as a channel for the distribution of official and unofficial propaganda in favour of Salafi-jihadi groups, Gustafsson further illustrates how one social media platform was used for recruitment attempts. For example, such attempts of recruitment occurred using appeals and requests from Swedish individuals already on site in Syria. In addition, Gustafsson shows that the narratives presented include a number of alternating and overlapping factors, where humanitarian-, religious-, and ideological motives were combined with themes of martyrdom, as well as promises of adventure, violence, weapons, and fellowship.
