ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Tore Hamming accounts for the history of Danish Jihadis and the evolution of their use of media channels, from the 1980s to present day. In comparison to current global trends within the larger Salafi-jihadi online milieu and its reliance on encrypted media platforms, the Danish militant Islamists stand out. This due to their consistent reliance on Facebook as their primary digital platform, which is used to disseminate propaganda, recruit, as well as to communicate. While such a reliance clearly sets limits for their communication, Hamming concludes that the use of such an open platform is necessary in Denmark in order to reach a broad audience. As such, the increased access to potential recruits apparently outweighs the drawbacks associated with the use of open platforms.
