ABSTRACT

This chapter foregrounds group exercise as a pleasurable leisure pursuit that unites older people. It focuses on resilience and the power of social interaction at times of transition and adversity. It highlights how personal growth occurs alongside meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging. Central to the story are the agentic responses to the challenges of the pandemic and the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being that was fostered. The ability to adapt to change becomes even more crucial as people age and the environment of living becomes less familiar. The abnormal circumstances of the pandemic have thrown this effect into stark relief, highlighting ageist stereotypes. This study shows how people in the reference group confronted conditions agentically to sustain their own well-being. Much can be learnt from their approach and actions to provide support for others in normal times, particularly with regard to promoting digital connections, group activities, and a sense of belonging. The role of volunteering and charitable organisations is heavily implicated in such progress.
