ABSTRACT

The ban on the operation of clubs and discos, introduced in many countries in March 2020 and maintained at various times, alternating with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, had a significant impact on the socio-economic aspects of the clubbing industry. The results of this study using online surveys and secondary data on clubbing events and the activities of clubs and discos in Poland (especially in Krakow and Warsaw) suggest that there was no mass organisation of so-called quarantine parties during lockdown periods, as was the case in some Western European countries. Most of the Polish clubbing venues, due to the 15-month ban on organising dance events, had to change their business profile to cocktail and drink bars or started operating as restaurants. This significantly changed the evening and night-time landscape of cities famous for clubbing; however, contrary to some announcements, the regulations introduced during the pandemic did not lead to the bankruptcy of the majority of the venues that before the pandemic were organising parties.
