ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, we summarise the main findings of this monograph, we discuss the main implications of our research for the Italian context (and elsewhere), while also signalling some avenues for further enquiry. From a comparative vantage point, we confirm a number of hypotheses on individual participation emerging from previous research, making them more robust and generalisable. By contextualising our results in light of the specific historical circumstances we have addressed, we do, however, highlight the specificity of progressive resistance in times of meagre economic circumstances and political backlash. In doing so, we also reflect on some of the characteristics of contentious politics in recent times, developing a comparison with similar research on progressive movements addressing right-wing backlash in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Brazil.
