ABSTRACT

A conversation between Teodor Shanin and Gustavo Esteva in 1992 covers the book's main themes, anticipating what is still the subject of intense debate today, such as anti-capitalisms without socialism. This chapter is a tribute to Shanin, who died a short time ago and whose work received a lot of attention. His contributions continue to be of enormous importance in linking the West and the East, with a critical distance from the Soviet Union and the socialist construction and very solid contributions on the way forward. He clearly anticipates the future of community, which is one of the central themes of the book. He also evidenced the current uses of Marx's thinking and the limits and problems of Marxism.
