ABSTRACT

January 1, 1994, was a world awakening: the ¡Basta! Enough! of the Zapatista uprising became a call to resist neoliberalism that was adopted by social movements everywhere and generated the current antisystemic movements. In this chapter the main ideas and practices of the Zapatistas are described, to show the challenges they represent to the dominant system.

The text is based in a book written three months after the uprising, in 1994, and reformulated and edited several times in the following 20 years.
