ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and reflects on the author's experiences over 30 years or so of working with colleagues in education systems across the world to find ways of promoting inclusive education. During that period, he has contributed to a series of international developments coordinated by UNESCO, the United Nations organisation most concerned with education policy. Running through these developments has been a struggle to find ways of defining the inclusion agenda. It is argued that these experiences suggest lessons that may be valuable to others who are trying to promote inclusion and equity within education systems. These ideas reinforce the argument that the promotion of equity in schools is essentially a social process that has to occur within particular contexts. In this sense, it is about learning how to live with difference and, indeed, learning how to learn from difference. The chapter concludes that the most important factor is the collective will to make it happen.
