ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses fansubbing of RuPaul’s Drag Race using Corpus Linguistics tools. Our investigation, reported here, focuses on the cultural representations of individuals when LGBTQ+ jargon is translated (from English to Portuguese) in the show. Our study comprises of analyzing season nine of Drag Race, and the translations were carried out by Fabutrash, due to the site’s Drag Race subtitling work since 2010. Our results show that the jargons used in the translations make little use of traditional drag lexicon (from pajubá or yorubá), and in contrast uses mainstream language. We argue that the translation does not preserve traditional Brazilian drag references, and we suggest that the presence of colonization in the Brazilian drag scene and language is influenced by the globalization of Drag Race itself.
