ABSTRACT

Wendelinus Hamutenya, the first Black Mr Gay Namibia, helps lead his country into a progressively queer future. This author interviewed Wendelinus in July 2017 in Windhoek, the capital and largest city of Namibia. Wendelinus is from the Ovamba tribe, and he grew up in a village in northern Namibia called Oshalembe. Now, he is Namibian gay royalty and an advocate for his community. Masculinity Studies facilitate the methodological framework in this chapter that lays the foundation for Wendelinus’s historic life. It covers his coming-out story through his experience at Mr Gay World, which brought global visibility to his country and cause.
