ABSTRACT

Writing involves a complex set of choices: About topic and how best to communicate to the reader; vocabulary, grammar and textual structure and the secretarial aspects of writing. The individual writer also needs a unique voice, which, paradoxically, may develop through collaboration in a community of writers. Managing a balance between the competing demands of the individual’s development and those of the whole class requires thought and skill on the part of the teacher. Developing writers need examples of good writing, which can be in the form of model texts by published authors, adults in the classroom and visiting writers. Story maps, frames and other scaffolds may be helpful, but, ultimately, writing requires, time, space and creative energy in order to flourish
