ABSTRACT

A deliberate campaign was developed by Freud and his orthodox followers to suppress and remove Ferenczi’s Confusion of Tongues idea and his nontraditional experimental methods from mainstream psychoanalysis. It was a vehement idea to remove Ferenczi’s ideas and clinical functioning from analytic history. A historically tragic moment in psychoanalysis clearly escalated the Totschweigen campaign. Ferenczi arranged a meeting with Freud to discuss his Confusion of Tongues paper before delivering it. When Ferenczi read his paper to Freud, he reacted with anger and rejection. Ferenczi was emotionally traumatized by Freud’s rejection. Freud’s followers attacked Ferenczi’s personality and professionality. The Totschweigen campaign was successful as it removed Ferenczi’s work from psychoanalysis for over 50 years.
