Monument Preservation during Socialism: Restorations and Reconstructions of Hungarian Roman Catholic Churches in the 1960–70s

The article introduces an interesting case of socialist state's approach towards reconstruction of historic churches. In the 1960s Hungarian state authorities began gradually softening their policy towards the Catholic church, thus enabling cooperation in the area of the sacral building preservation. This resulted in numerous regional historic research programmes and reconstructions that contradicted the official communist-socialist ideology and paved the way to the most successful period in the history of Hungarian monument preservation.
