ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the topic of social media and its role in forming the political consciousness and political change in Algeria. Algeria has known, during the last decade, a wide use of social media at a low cost since 2011, due to the spread of the internet, the increase of the users and the number of computers and mobile phones even in remote places such as the Saharan swathes. However, after 2015, Algerian users of the internet, particularly youngsters, have increased to the point that Algeria ranked among the first countries in the world. In 2018 the number of new users increased by 3.5 millions according to the report “Hot Sweet”. The social media have increased their presence in Algeria at the expense of mass media and have become an important independent variable, which impacts the political awareness as a dependent variable.
