ABSTRACT

The impact of AI-enabled bot is a subject of discussion in academic venues, while the general public is not much aware of it. The spread of fake news on Online Social Networks has been under investigation for several years by the research community. Initially, socialbots were designed to perform repetitive tasks faster and more efficiently than humans, such as automated content aggregators. This chapter provides a review of the latest AI technologies supporting bots. It discusses the malicious activities of socialbots documented in the literature and reviews the state-of-the-art of existing detection methodologies. The chapter analyses the AI-based technological pillars supporting socialbots, presents the state-of-the-art of existing socialbots, and lists the most important toolkits, frameworks, and SDKs publicly available for developing socialbots.
