ABSTRACT

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the Islamic State (IS), its Arabic language acronym Daesh, or Caliphate, is a Salafi jihadist militant group and an unrecognised proto-state that follows a fundamentalist, Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam. Forty-nine semi-structured interviews were collected from volunteer participants, both men and women, Muslims and non-Muslims, who participated in a direct experience as a target audience of the IS communication strategies. The IS communication landscape is a phenomenon that can be seen worldwide. Due to changes over time, some of the jihadists’ communication strategies have been renovated to a more modern and technological style, forcing target audiences to adjust.
