ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses four communication models: linear communication model of Shannon and Weaver; linear; interactive; and transactional on communication models applicability to telemedicine communication. Telemedicine was coined in the 1970s to refer to “healing at a distance”. The concept of communication fidelity is assumed to be significant in ensuring the clarity of messages in any medical communication situation. It is presumed to be an essential variable in the analysis of a telemedicine system. The history of telemedicine started when men required medicine at a distance as practiced by the American Indians using smoke signals, though each country has its own story of origin in telemedicine. Telemedicine communication of the case happened among the communication exchanges of the patient, physician, and the medical specialist.
