ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the existing evidence-based literature in relation to exceptional skills in people with autism spectrum disorder. The arguments identified offer important implications for the early identification of the raw, subtle markers of strengths and bring forth promising practices to aid appropriate intervention in the early family and school years. It concludes by identifying the key components for a model of nurturance with elements including early identification, ongoing assessment, and skill development for people with ASD for application by the practice group. It provides significant insights and future direction for parents and practitioners at the forefront of working with autistic people.
