ABSTRACT

Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) are often neglected in suicide prevention and intervention programming within schools. School mental health providers, who play a pivotal role in implementing suicide prevention and intervention, must intervene when students with ID express suicidal thoughts and actions. Several strategies and adaptations can assist school mental health providers to better serve this population. This chapter will review suicide risk factors, discuss assessment practices, and recommend prevention practices to provide appropriate prevention and intervention supports for students with ID who may be struggling with suicidal ideation.
