ABSTRACT

During the last decades, a growing number of students with disabilities attend higher education institutions (HEIs). A range of opportunities and services are nowadays provided in HEIs, which address the diverse needs of students with different disabilities. Peer support services are widely used and have proved to be beneficial for different target groups and persons with heterogeneous characteristics empowering the content and context of inclusive educational settings. The aim of this chapter is to describe a multidimensional volunteering peer support program in a higher education institution that involves students with and without disabilities. An analysis is provided of the framework that underpins the operation of this program and the range of services that are provided. Furthermore, the chapter underlines that volunteering peer support is a challenging and demanding service. Therefore, there is a need for constant monitoring as well as training and support of the students, ensuring in this way its maximum benefits.
