ABSTRACT

Persons with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries continue to encounter barriers to participating in the open labour market. Vocational training aims to equip individuals with vocation-related skills that enable economic independence. Individuals with disabilities encounter barriers in accessing vocational training programmes due to multiple factors. Many vocational training programmes are not inclusive to persons with disabilities, which results in their exclusion from any form of employment. In this chapter, four types of vocational training programmes available in South Africa are discussed, and barriers to access these programmes by individuals with disabilities are highlighted. These four types of vocational training include vocational training in schools and vocational training colleges, apprenticeships, and supported and sheltered employment programmes.
