ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of institutional philanthropy in international organization and global governance. While philanthropic foundations are often overlooked as international actors, over the past century philanthropic foundations have at various points played an important, if somewhat obscured, part in shaping the international architecture, particularly in fields such as health and agriculture. This chapter charts their growth, decline and, reemergence as central actors. It explores the contributions they make to global governance through their material resources and ability to build networks and coalitions, while also exploring some of the controversies and criticisms associated with their activities.
