ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on the psychological effects of lockdown. She states that the unconscious is very active under such circumstances. The author suggests introversion to explore the inner world and become creative with the images that emerge – like Jung himself did with the Red Book. To answer the question of the reason why especially Westerners are so afraid of death, she looks back in history and finds there was a shift in how individuals and society looked at death. Once theme to intellectuals like Sartre or Kierkegaard, today death is a topic that evokes strong emotions and panic. The fear of death is archetypal, as animals we instinctively want to live, but by thinking of death the thought about afterlife is not far. In the pandemic he sees a chance to reflect about death and afterlife anew.
