ABSTRACT

Involvement in the IAAP’s formulation of its 2020 questionnaire to members concerning the Covid-19 pandemic gave Merchant the opportunity to canvas the experiences of colleagues from around the world about working online. This chapter overviews their very personal responses which have been grouped thematically following a qualitative analysis. One common issue was the understandable adjustment to working online, especially if not an analyst’s personal preference. Other experiences included a noticeable exhaustion factor with online work, particular ways of using the screen, the need for patients to find a confidential space for online sessions, adjustments to patients’ personal preferences and how to respond to new referrals online. Significant adjustments have thereby been required of analysts both in their personal lives and in their capacity to work online.
