ABSTRACT

The Navigating belonging gallery is a vivid, atmospheric space of navigation within academia which involves plotting paths, grappling with navigational difficulties and searching for new horizons and homecomings. On the walls hang monumental works of ships on stormy seas, light houses, treacherous rocks, crowded lifeboats, desert islands and the horizons of brave new lands. Contributors to this gallery display intrepidness and tenacity in navigating academia by choosing their own guiding stars and meaningful routes. This can be difficult when not starting from the ‘right’ place and being out there on the open sea where one is disorientated and exposed. It requires courage, skill, reflection and tenacity. Some authors have arrived unaided, others have experienced the support of fellow travelers and allies whilst others are still traveling alone.
