ABSTRACT

In this portrait, a picture is drawn of the academic who might choose to create their own pathway to a permanent post by working in ways that are community orientated and that focus on student empowerment. By thinking about innovation and creativity in terms of addressing community need and in creating change through action, the role of the academic can move away from the emphasis on either research ‘with impact’ or teaching ‘for outcomes’, and instead address holistically the relationship between new ideas and the student, the lecturer, the institution, and the wider community it can and should serve.
