ABSTRACT

A restorative space where one can feel resourced and nurtured, this gallery explores how careers are shaped differently by various kinds of nurturing and caring, including motherhood, care for the environment and broader communities, care for students and for each other as colleagues, and care and nurture of oneself. Four contributions are presented, exploring respectively how the principles of permaculture can be used as a tool for reflection and as a guide for a sustainable and meaningful career; how important are relationships, especially in a context where our work is increasingly mediated by geographical distance and technology; how one can have a rich and successful career without compromising professional integrity, nor diminish commitment to being a good parent; and why care is so important in the context of the fragmentation that characterises academic life.
