ABSTRACT

This is a full-length portrait of an academic and his reflexive journal. Through a process of writing and painting in the journal, the subject of the portrait notices and creates the lived experience of his role. The portrait captures layers of experience over time that inform and disturb his contributions to knowledge and to pedagogy. It is a never-complete self-portrait constructed from images and words of an ongoing academic career. It is the art of reflection. Experience is painted as a way of understanding and transforming it. The reflexive journal is a medium for thought, imagination, emotion and connection. The subject of this portrait explores the process of being an academic as ‘creative understanding in the making’.
