ABSTRACT

This chapter tells a story of being a woman in academic philosophy. It lays out personal experiences of both internalised and institutional sexism and is as such a critique of the patriarchal environment in certain parts of the male-dominated academic field. But it is also a story of letting go of the need for institutional approval and the joy of doing academic life differently by teaching philosophy at a Grundtvigian folk high school (folkehøjskole) in Denmark. The aim of the chapter is twofold: first, to bring more awareness to philosophy’s consistent gender-bias, and to inspire others in similar life situations to think more creatively about what an academic career might consist of.
