ABSTRACT

Against Careerism gallery is a large, stark, white-walled gallery where Pop Art primary colours jar and jangle messages of resistance against the commercialisation and codification of the neoliberal university. Video installations loop and project defiant images: ‘STOP’, ‘THINK’, ‘SAY NO’, ‘RESIST’ on the white walls yet disembodied voices encouraging you to take on more and to career towards ‘excellence’ break the silence. This gallery is a wakeup call, a place to stop careering, to reflect on why you entered academia, what it has become and what it could be. Authors bring their own images and metaphors of resisting careerism, of nurturing and caring for the self, of leading value and vocation driven careers to adorn the empty walls, to collectively make it their own place and to showcase what is important (to them).
