ABSTRACT

A shift to a more sustainable and equitable relationship with the Earth and with each other is very important. But how do we help one another envision the changes that are possible and how do we inspire one another to act? In this chapter, the author explores how to create public imagination through speculative prototyping and through the demonstration of new possibilities lived out in public space. To achieve this goal, he has developed an off-grid micro ecovillage with and for university students. This “living laboratory” is in its third year of immersive, daily testing and demonstration. The goals of the project are to discover new options for sustainable living, improve those options through prototyping, normalize the new behaviors, and share the experiences with the public. The ultimate goal is to create public desire and imagination for a sustainable future.
