ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the resolution of communication problems in a telephone-interpreted screening interview in Finland. The interpreter and the interviewee communicate in French, and the communication problems due to their mismatching linguistic resources are aggravated by the constraints of telephone interpreting, such as lack of access to visual information. Communication issues in telephone interpreting characterized by mismatching linguistic resources between the participants could be overcome by the interpreter’s slower delivery rate and a verbal indication of the beginning of the interpreter’s turn. In addition, the encounter should start with a clear briefing in plain language.
