ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a multimodal micro-analysis of verbal and non-verbal face-work in four excerpts of a video remote interpreter-mediated interaction. Two research questions guide our research: (1) Which types of verbal and non-verbal face-work do participants engage in? (2) To what extent can a multimodal micro-analytical approach be used for this kind of analysis? The findings show that (1) all participants engage in various forms of both verbal and non-verbal face-work, (2) a micro-analytical approach can be a useful tool, and (3) in some instances a micro-analysis based on observational data alone does not suffice to formulate conclusive answers.
