ABSTRACT

Combining insights from translation studies, theatre studies, and (media) accessibility studies, this introduction identifies and presents an overview of key concepts and themes that emerge in the subsequent chapters. The book explores surtitling for theatre and emphasises the critical role it plays in inclusive theatre-making. It highlights the role(s) of the multiple agents involved in the translation and performance production chain and discusses the way(s) in which surtitling and diverse theatre translation strategies can address the call for inclusivity and accessibility for all. The book presents any (new) means available to theatre translators/surtitlers and builds on the importance of tackling issues related to both physical challenges and linguistic and cultural exchange, while pointing to the attempts made to meet the needs and expectations of the intended audience(s) and transform theatrical experience.
