ABSTRACT

This chapter explores recent attitudes and usages in the field of sub/surtitling. It focuses primarily on live music performances in Europe and highlights contrasts between industry practices, audience expectations and the reality of title provisions. More specifically, it considers differences in sub/surtitling provision between live shows in general and music performances, primarily outside opera and musicals. It discusses the circumstances in which sub/surtitling may be useful in musical performances, and highlights the vital role of charities defending the interests of special users in driving the provision textual support for musical shows that involve lyrics. The chapter concludes that provision of lyrics, intra- or interlinguistically, depending on the context, adds to the enjoyment of a performance in most cases and should be fought for in live music settings.
