ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present a brief overview of the Canadian space sector from a legal and policy perspective to facilitate a quick understanding of Canada’s expertise by the community of practitioners, and in particular, the commercial sector. The chapter starts with the cutting-edge technical legacy to help the reader grasp the pioneering role Canada played and still plays in the space sector worldwide. It then proceeds to describing past and current policy and legal developments in both a chronological and categorised order based on the nature of available documents. This structure draws a stark contrast between the dynamic technical prowess in Canada and national regulatory stagnation, which is in need of reform. The chapter concludes with a discussion about this contrast and with recommendations on how to unblock the situation.
