ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the main thread of sustainability from the perspective of ensuring a safe outer space environment in support of continued space activities; it provides an overview of the latest discussions at COPUOS level and examines how these issues are addressed at a national level. The key focus is the extent to which the international responsibilities of states can be converted or flown down to ensure accountability of the commercial sector for sustainable outer space activities.
