ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the 2021 Regulation for the European Union Space Programme at European Union level and reviews the interfaces in structure both towards the EU institutions, ESA, and Member States. It reviews the current and more recent legal and policy instruments for the EU Space Programme aimed at supporting the EU’s ambition for an enhanced role at the global level. The impact of the Union’s limited powers to expand its space activities beyond what is prescribed in its treaties is reviewed in the context of an emerging commercial sector calling for streamlined decision-making and faster access to funds.
