ABSTRACT

A challenging situation prevails in the organizational sectors in developing countries like India to recruit skillful incumbents. The Indian economy is predominantly driven by knowledge, quality talent, and advanced skills and has become the most critical competitive advantage for organizations. The skills relevant to the emerging economic environment have to be upgraded and re-skilled. Skills mismatch is one of the major issues faced by the recruiters of an organization. The organizations expect suitable candidates with requisite communication skills for the respective cadres in their organizations. The skills gap can be bridged by infusing experience-based and real-world learning experiences, by embracing new teaching technologies and techniques. This chapter focuses on the requirement of communication skills in English at the workplace and the adverse effects of skills mismatch in the organizations’ performance due to the lack of English language proficiency. It emphasizes the need for a paradigm shift in the approach of both the academia and the industry to attain skill development in order to combat the challenges of the global economy.
