ABSTRACT

This chapter examines recent picturebooks that thematise border crossing and have been published simultaneously in both English and Spanish (or in bilingual editions) in the U.S. Six picturebooks have been authored by Latinx authors, while one of them has been published by a non-Latinx author in collaboration with an NGO involved with refugee children. The chapter inquires into how the narrations are related to the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in the nation, just as they are related to familial belonging, hope, and care. The chapter argues that books are the first and foremost elements to produce belonging in children from migrant backgrounds and avoid delving into the increasingly hostile environment towards migrants in the U.S. and the several injustices related to the migration flux.
