ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the significance of family in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga. More specifically, this chapter engages with the last novel in the series, Midnight Sun (2020), and its role in reimagining and further detailing characters and events from the earlier novels. Some of the themes analysed include the formation of the Cullen vampire family and the appeal of the vampire family unit to the YA reader. This appeal emerges in the affluence of the Cullen family, exhibited such as in their home and belongings, and their tight familial bond, indicated in their dialogue. Further, a key point in the chapter is the tension among the characters in how to describe their vampire ‘family’. In addition, the chapter discusses the importance of the fan family as it relates to the franchise as a whole, inclusive of the film adaptations.
