ABSTRACT

Celebrated Cuban-American playwright María Irene Fornés (1930–2018) developed an innovative playwriting method that she taught at universities, festivals, and residencies that influenced and trained numerous award-winning playwrights. The Fornés Playwriting Method decenters the Western traditional play development terms such as point of attack, inciting action, climax, and denouement. The Fornés Playwriting Method values character creation as the genesis of a new play, with elements including centering movement, guided visualization, basic drawing, found materials, and communal writing. García-Romero and Núñez argue that new pedagogical frameworks, such as those offered by the Fornés Playwriting Method, are needed in 21st-century playwriting.
