ABSTRACT

The unique contribution to the world by Afrika design will be focusing on human relationships in the design process. Afrika design strives to give design, innovation and technology a human face. Design in Afrika should focus on inclusive development programmes that develop people’s capabilities. This is the kind of transformative agenda design seeks to achieve in Afrika. Afrika’s design narrative needs to be told by its natives who deeply understand its socio-cultural context. The starting point is to promote an Afrikan-wide dialogue on design, innovation, technology and the philosophy of Ubuntu. The future Afrikan ideology of industrial design requires acknowledging that designers and the community influence each other. For example, if one community suffers, this affects humanity. Designers in Afrika should build systems that ensure human well-being in design. Afrika designers should design for 90% of the population to have an impactful future influence. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
