ABSTRACT

This chapter provides practical tips on how to integrate social justice into the classroom. A social justice lens can be applied to any content area and any grade level. This chapter provides examples, definitions, and strategies to set the foundation for the rest of the book. Educators can start or continue their journey with the implementation of a social justice curriculum by reading this chapter. Tips for working with different groupings of students – homogenous, heterogeneous, afterschool, pull-out – are included in this chapter as well. Including caregivers and administrators in the decisions for cultivating a social justice mindset is important for laying the groundwork and having a successful and effective program. This chapter details why the authors think this work is so important and how they have started it in their schools.
