ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased social isolation and behavioral health disparities, including substance use disparities for individuals. This chapter focuses on what changes have been documented in substance use among LGBTQIA+ individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. We review data about substance use disparities among this population prior to COVID-19 as well as briefly overview data from non-LGBTQIA+ individuals. Using minority stress theory as a lens to identify co-occurring sequelae, we then review disparities prior to COVID-19 and examine subgroup substance use disorder data among LGBTQIA+ persons.
