ABSTRACT

Sit-stand desks have potential to reduce sitting and increase physical activity in the sedentary, office-based workplace. This chapter discusses a research approach that was utilised to inform the design of sit-stand desk interventions and make recommendations for workplaces. The approach taken was firstly to develop a draft intervention based on existing research evidence, behavioural theory, and the involvement of relevant stakeholders including human resources, facilities, and estates personnel. The intervention was then implemented within two office-based workplaces and a formative evaluation was conducted to inform ongoing intervention development. The evaluation was designed to elicit relevant knowledge, experiences, and needs from various stakeholders, including those implicated in supporting the delivery of workplace interventions as well as the intended users of the intervention. The benefits and challenges of involving stakeholders throughout the intervention development, delivery, and evaluation are reflected upon.
