ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present new forms of the concepts of ‘Education’ and ‘Knowing’ by reconstructing them from the perspective of the concepts of ‘Care’ and ‘Home.’ The term ‘Care,’ in Japanese ‘Kea’ (ケア), may have varying meanings in the context of education in not only the Western region but also the Eastern region. In this chapter, we focus on the concept of the 3Cs (Care, Concern, Connection) presented by Jane Roland Martin, who is a philosopher of education in the US, to clarify some of the significances of ‘Care’ in the development of intellectual ability, competencies, and ‘Intelligence.’ Similarly, the term ‘Home,’ in Japanese ‘Katei’ (家庭), has many educational implications. When we use the term ‘home education’ or ‘home schooling,’ we focus on features of the ‘home’ not only as the ‘place,’ namely ‘in the house,’ but also as the ‘role,’ ‘function,’ and ‘characteristic practices.’ Additionally, from a historical viewpoint, both the terms ‘Care’ and ‘Home’ have been brought from the Western regions. However, these terms are now used as Japanese words and have important implications in educational theories in Japan. Therefore, we may be able to reconsider the concept of ‘education’ from both sides of the East and West through analysing it based on the following themes: (1) what the meaning of ‘Care’ is in the educational context; (2) ‘Home (Katei)’ and ‘home education’ in the Edo period (1603–1867) in Japan; (3) some discussions examining ‘care’ and ‘home’ as educational concepts; and (4) the inextricable connection between Caring and Education.
